The first professional basketball leagues evolve during 1920s in the United States of America. Some of the prominent leagues during this period include American Basketball League which was founded in 1925 and the National Basketball League (NBL), which was launched in the year 1935. The owners of major sports arenas, specifically the Madison Square Garden established the Basketball Association of America (BAA) in 1946. However, in the year 1949, BAA merged with NBL to become the National Basketball Association, the pre eminent league in the world with twenty nine teams in United States and one in Canada.

In the year 1967, American Basketball Association (ABA) was formed and subsequently joined the NBA in the ABA-NBA merger 1967. Today, National Basketball Association relies on various people to recruit the players that are ultimately selected to play professional basketball. Another famous and second oldest professional sports basketball league in the world is the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). However, PBA is considered to be the best league in Asia. In the recent years, Chinese Basketball Association is tremendously gaining popularity. Outside of the NBA, the top professional basketball leagues of the world are also found in Europe. European professional sports basketball is also distinguished by its long established and well-developed transnational club competitions, most notably the Euroleague, which features top clubs from as many as 18 different domestic leagues. Two other continental club competitions, the Eurocup and EuroChallenge, are also organized annually. Europe also has transnational regional leagues, like Adriatic League and Baltics Basketball League.
